By Mark Elezaj

Shakur Stevenson, who represented the United States at the 2016 Summer Olympics winning a silver medal in the bantamweight division, had a very successful amateur career. As a youth he won both the 2014 AIBA Youth World Championship and the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics. In 2015 he won the Senior U.S. Olympic Trials, which qualified him for the U.S. boxing team at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He currently competes in the featherweight division and has a record of 9-0 with 5 KO’s.

In Rio, Stevenson impressed all, making it look easy in the ring. He ended up winning the silver medal, losing to Robeisy Ramirez of Cuba in the final match. He was however, the highest medaling male for the USA that year. Despite his loss, Stevenson was labeled “the next Mayweather” by fans, including Floyd Mayweather Jr. himself.

Stevenson turned professional on February 9, 2017 signing a promotional contract with Top Rank, also signing Andre Ward as his manager. He had his first pro bout on April 22, 2017, showing off his quickness, defense and punching skills as he won his first fight against Edgar Brito. Stevenson won via fifth round TKO.

He then made his Madison Square Garden debut on the undercard of the Crawford vs. Diaz light welterweight championship fight on May 20, 2017. His took on Argentine boxer Carlos Suarez, winning the fight after 2 minutes and 35 seconds of the first round.

Stevenson’s third fight took place at the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska, facing David Michel Paz in a scheduled six round fight. Stevenson our in a boxing clinic, easily out scoring Paz, winning 60-53 on all three scorecards. He has had continued success, making it look easy in the ring. His opponents looked outclassed. His hand speed, power and defense are almost flawless. Stevenson won his last fight this past Saturday night against Viorel Simion by TKO.

This young man is the future of the sport, trust me when I tell you. His boxing skill speaks for itself, it’s a thing of beauty when he’s in the ring. He’s an up and coming star and it’s only a matter of time before he headlines a fight card. I personally can’t wait to see his next fight. When you ask me Who Is Shakur Stevenson, my answer will always be THE TRUTH!
