Mikey Garcia Dares To Be Great

By Mark Elezaj

Mikey Garcia, the current WBC and IBF lightweight champion, is on a collision course to face Errol Spence Jr. in what looks to be a huge fight in early 2019. So what’s the big deal? Fighters fight! Well this fight will be a big test for Garcia who will be jumping up two weight classes to fight the cream of the crop in Spence at 147 lbs.

“It’s a challenge that excites me and motivates me, that’s why I want it. I think it’s a fight that can put me on top of the boxing world” Garcia said.

Spence responded by saying “He’s a big name and that’s the top name I can get right now so I would definitely take it.”

Robert Garcia, Mikey’s trainer, prefers a unification bout with Vasyl Lomachenko but believes that fight can still be made regardless of what happens in the Spence fight.

Garcia is following a trend set by other fighters like Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya, Amir Khan and Kell Brook who moved up in weight to face the best in that division. Some were successful others not so lucky, but one thing they all have in common is that they’ve all looked for the big payday and title opportunities.

So what’s the problem?

Garcia, who was the top guy at 135 and a champion at 140, will be facing an elite champion at 147. The problem is that they’re not meeting at a catchweight and that can cause many issues for Garcia.

Spence is currently riding an 11 fight knockout streak, including a recent beat down of Kell Brook. He’s a true force in that ring and is looking to move on and face Terence Crawford in the future.

Garcia is a top pound for pound guy, a technical fighter with a killer instinct backed up by his ferocious punching power.

So what will the outcome be?

Garcia is taking a huge risk with this fight. Yes he’s an amazing talent and yes he will put on a show but will Spence be in any danger? Can a smaller fighter moving up in weight hurt the larger guy? I know we, the fans, will enjoy the fight because both men will give it their all. Either way, Garcia is in a win win situation.

The good news is that if Garcia loses, he can go back down in weight and set up another blockbuster fight against Lomachenko, while Spence can move forward and set up a fight with the likes of Danny Garcia, Keith Thurman or Terence Crawford. The better news For Garcia is that if he somehow wins, he then becomes a huge name in the welterweight division and he can set up bigger fights within the division. Mikey is daring to be great and you have to respect that. Lets wait and see.
