If the rumors are true, Manny Pacquiao and Keith Thurman could be set to face each other in the ring this summer.
According to boxing insider Mike Coppinger, the Pacquiao vs. Thurman fight is close to being a done deal. If the fight is made official, it looks like the two will face off on July 20.
Pacquiao (61-7-2, 39 KO) currently holds the WBA “world” welterweight title, and Thurman (29-0, 22 KO) is currently the WBA “super world” welterweight champion.
Pacquiao is coming off of a unanimous decision victory over Adrien Broner. At 40 years old, it’s clear that he is not the fighter he once was, but he would still be considered the “A-side” if this fight were to take place. Pacquiao vs. Broner sold 400K, compared to 325K for Wilder vs. Fury in and 360K for Spence vs. Garcia in March. Manny remains a huge name in the sport, a true fan favorite, and one of the top guys in the welterweight division.
Thurman recently returned to action, beating Josesito Lopez by majority decision. This was Thurman’s first fight since defeating Danny Garcia back in March of 2017.
If this fight does happen, it would be the first time Thurman headlines a pay-per-view.
I feel that this is a good and interesting fight. Pacquiao vs. Thurman has the potential to be one of the best fights this year. Pacquiao looked impressive in his last two fights, beating Lucas Matthysse and Adrien Broner while Thurman looked a bit rusty in his return fight against Josesito Lopez, struggling a bit and getting hurt more than once. Let’s wait and see what happens.
