Andy Ruiz Jr. shocked the world with one of the biggest upsets in boxing history, when he stopped Anthony Joshua in seven rounds, capturing the IBF, WBO and WBA world heavyweight titles in New York last Saturday night.
The victory made Ruiz the first Mexican to become the heavyweight champion.
A rematch clause was part of the contract for the fight, and Eddie Hearn said that the clause has been triggered on Tuesday.
“After meetings with AJ, Rob Mc[Cracken – Joshua’s trainer] and the management team in NY, we have today triggered the contracted rematch clause with Andy Ruiz Jr,” Hearn stated on Twitter .
“The fight will take place in Nov/Dec at a venue to be confirmed shortly.”
With Tuesday’s announcement, Ruiz Jr. will get the chance to prove that his victory was not a fluke and that he can do it again.
Ruiz Jr. has made it clear to both Hearn and Joshua that he is the champion now, and it is he who calls the shots. He also said that he would prefer the rematch take place in either Los Angeles or Mexico.
