Gennadiy “GGG” Golovkin has his sights set on Saul Canelo Alvarez for his next match in September. According to Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated, the fight may be in jeopardy of happening.
There are issues that need to be agreed on, or Golden Boy Promotions, with Canelo, will move on in another direction for a September fight.
So, what seems to be the problem?
The major problem is the location for the Canelo vs. GGG trilogy. Golovkin wants the fight to happen in New York or Texas, he feels that he should have won the first two fights in Vegas, but the judges weren’t impressed. Canelo, who won the second fight by a close decision, would be considered the “A” side in the fight, and wants the fight to take place Las Vegas, Nevada.
“I want [the fight at MSG],” Golovkin said after defeating Rolls. “It’s different people, different atmosphere.”
“It’s not like in principle I don’t like to go to Vegas,” Golovkin said. “But I have some bad feelings about Vegas.”
Oscar De La Hoya said he will start looking at other opponents for Alvarez’s next fight.
Canelo’s other options for September are a unification match against WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade or WBA Super World World super middleweight champion Callum Smith. Both are two excellent fights for Canelo.
“We’re going to do the third fight when Canelo wants to do it,’’ Eric Gomez, Golden Boy’s president, told Yahoo Sports on Friday. “Is he interested in it? Of course. But there’s a lot of other fighters he’s interested in, too.’’
“Money’s not an issue with Canelo,’’ Gomez said. “He wants to make history.’’
“Canelo’s in the position that he can pick and choose whoever he wants to fight,’’ Gomez said. “There are guys out there that are probably more deserving at this point than Golovkin.’’
DAZN, who both Canelo and Golovkin both signed big contracts with. feel Canelo vs. Golovkin 3 would bring new subscriptions to their service and are very interested in making the fight happen this September. They will probably step in to resolve any and all obstacles to get the fight made.
Golovkin does not want the fight in Las Vegas again, and Canelo does. It looks like the fight between both men has already started.
