Santa Fe- Former welterweight champion Carlos Baldomir was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Wednesday for the sexual abuse of one of his daughters.
Baldomir was arrested in 2016 after his ex wife alleged that he was abusing his seven year old daughter in 2012 and 2014.
Baldomir, 48, was found guilty of the repeated sexual abuse of a child.
Baldomir became the WBC champion after he shocked the world by beating Zab Judah, the unified welterweight champion, in New York.
He went on to defend the title against Arturo Gatti before being beaten by Floyd Mayweather in November 2006. In 2014, he faced Canelo Alvarez and lost via 6th round knockout.
Baldomir has a few more fights, and then retired in 2014, becoming a trainer in Argentina.
Baldomir has already spent almost three years in detention after he was arrested back in November 2016.
He has denied the charges, and his lawyer described the sentence as “very high and excessive.”
