2020 is already starting to sound like it will be a huge year for women’s boxing.
Cecilia Braekhus (36-0, 9 knockouts), who successfully defending her undisputed Welterweight championship against Argentinian Victoria Bustos, moved closer to a huge fight against Katie Taylor.
The victory extended her unbeaten professional record to 36 fights, her 25th straight World Title defence.
Moments after Braekhus’s unanimous decision victory, promoter Eddie Hearn mentioned the possibility of a fight with Katie Taylor happening in the summer of 2020.
33-year-old Taylor (15-0, 6 KOs) became the third woman to become an undisputed champion with her controversial majority decision over Delfine Persoon back in June.
“Of course, the future is Katie Taylor against Cecilia Braekhus, two undisputed world champions,” said Hearn.
“I think another fight probably for both in the spring and then a summer fight. It’s the biggest fight in boxing.”
“Cecilia has broken down the doors in professional boxing. She wants to make sure that she can have the biggest fights out there. Certainly those two are on a collision course” Hearn stated.
Braekhus responded, “Yeah, that sounds good to me.”
“It was a good ten rounds to get back in business. I got into my groove in the third round. Now I want to go on holiday and then get back in the gym.”
Earlier in the week, Braekhus told DAZN: “I hope Katie Taylor wins her next fight and gets a good win. The main goal is to fight Katie Taylor.
“Because I feel like I can challenge myself if I fight her, and it would be the biggest fight of them all unless Serrano beats her — then Serrano is the one I want to meet.
“I don’t have a long time left in the sport.
“I was very tired after my last fight. I kept asking myself if this was it.
“But then I got back to Norway and got to relax a little bit. I was at home doing nothing with boxing at all.
“Then all these girls started to call me out. You had Claressa Shields, Katie Taylor, Cyborg, all calling me out in like one week. Then I was like, ‘No, I’m definitely not done here.’”
