ANAHEIM, Calif. – Ryan Garcia (20-0, 17 KO’s) made it look easy Friday night, stopping Francisco Fonseca (25-3-2, 19 KO’s) in the first round of their lightweight fight with a counter left hook that sent Fonseca to the canvas.
Garcia landed 7 of 20 punches while Fonseca only landed 1 of 9.
“It was a good performance,” Garcia said with a smile. “It didn’t last too long. I watched video of Sugar Ray Robinson coming into this fight. He did a little fake, and he caught them with a left hook. I was planning for it to go a little longer, I’m not gonna lie. But respect to Fonseca, they were great people. They respected I me the whole time.
“I saw the left hook, it was there. I just needed to let him commit to a shot. So I let him get comfortable, and then I caught him with the shot.
“I’m 21, I’m a late bloomer,” Garcia said. “I’m ready for everyone, and I’m comfortable. I’m ready to go after everyone. I’m turned up. Let’s go.
Earlier Friday night, Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya said that he had already booked the Staples Center in Los Angeles for a matchup between Garcia and Jorge Linares, who himself was impressive Friday night, scoring a fourth round KO victory over Carlos Morales in the co-main event. With things working out as they did, a Garcia vs Linares fight is a huge possibility, and Garcia said that he is ready to take on the top names at 135.
“I’m ready for everybody now. I’m ready. I feel comfortable. I’ve been in there with all the good sparring. I’m ready for everybody, let’s go!”
Attention then turned to Devin Haney, who was in the ring next to Garcia. The two had a brief war of words which led to Garcia saying “We’re good fighters. Let’s f—ing fight.”
“I had a plan for 2020,” Garcia said. “That was to shock the world. So I’m about to shock the world. Beat Linares, beat Luke Campbell, beat Gervanta Davis, then I’m going to go after Devin.”
Haney responded, “You see he said Devin Haney last, he knows I’m the best fighter in the world. Let’s make this fight happen now.”
