Carson, California – Former unified heavyweight champion of the world, Andy Ruiz Jr., successfully returned to the ring Saturday night with a unanimous decision victory over Chris Arreola.
The judges scored the bout 117-110, 118-109, 118-109.
The Fighting Voice had it at 115-112 for Ruiz.
Both warriors walked into the fight with a point to prove.
For Arreola, he was looking to stay relevant, eyeing the winner of Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua .
For Ruiz, he wanted to prove that he was not a one hit wonder, returning to the ring after his loss to Anthony Joshua for the first time since 2019.
From the opening bell, Ruiz looked to start fast and be the aggressor but Arreola would respond, and in the second round he put Ruiz down with a straight right hand. As the round continued, Arreola continued to stay on the attack, easily landing his right hand on Ruiz.
In the third, Ruiz regained his legs and started to box with Arreola, picking his spots and keeping Arreola on the defensive, unable to land a huge shot.
Ruiz began to target the body in the fourth and work off of his jab throughout the fight.
Midway through the fight, Arreola seemed to have injured his left shoulder.
Both men showed the heart of a warrior by giving as good as they received. Ruiz would continue to land combinations on Arreola but never hurt him.
Arreola began to have a hard time finding Ruiz, who would respond with combinations and slipping out of range.
In the final round, it was obvious that Arreola’s left shoulder was hurting him. Ruiz continued to land his combination with no response from Arreola. The final bell sounded and the fight was over.
“He caught me with a good right hand, I dropped my hands a little bit,” Ruiz said. “I was overconfident. Tops off to him. Chris caught me with a good one, but I kept going. I felt a little rust and I know other fighters can relate to that.”Ruiz said.
“We did what we had to do and we got the victory which was to counter punch and work the body to slow him down a little bit. If he wants to run it back, we can run it back. We can have Chris Arreola-Andy Ruiz rematch and run this back here if the promoter wants.”
After the fight, a visibly upset Arreola spoke his mind.
“I got hit a couple times in the shoulder and it kind of threw it off. No big deal, that’s a part of boxing,”
“I absolutely respect the judges, but today, I’ll always say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, they like butterface today, everything is pretty but their face. Did he win? Fine. But don’t tell me you’re gonna only give me two or three rounds.”
“Did he win? Fine. But to not give me anymore rounds, I have to be like Dr. Dre and say, ‘All you can suck my motherf—ing d—.’
“In all honesty, we can run this back. Look at me, look at my face. I’m still good.”
